It's true, Dan Vencil is probably the greatest proffessor you can ever have. Take his class and he'll teach you the supply and demand curve for a hgeroin addict, he'll teach you why the porn industry still thrives during a slumping economy, and he'll taeach you how to launder (sp?) money from country to country. He is So Damn entertaining for an econ prof it's rediculous!!!

Very interesting teacher, teaches a lot about abstract economics-related subjects (like flea markets in the Netherlands and the economics of prostitution in Tokyo). Read the book, tests can be hard but they're curved. He knows his stuff and is very approachable and easygoing.

I took Dr. Vencill's Econ 515 course this summer on the basis of many of the reviews here. Regarding exams, he is an easy grader, allowing several opportunities for extra credit. He's also a good lecturer, giving students a wealth of information to absorb. He is knowledgeable on the topic of Econ and Criminal Justice, and it shows.
The majority of the 3 1/2 hour, twice a week course was spent listening to Dr. Vencill lecture. And although his lectures can be very interesting, they can also get a bit boring, causing your mind to drift off every now and then. We had a midterm and final; the "review" questions were handed out a few classes early--but it was these questions (which mainly consisted of short answer essay) that were the actual exam.
A lot of the previous reviews are on point. Asking a simple question in class can cause Dr. V to veer way off topic; he can ramble on on just about anything! Another reviewer commented on the amount of handouts Dr. V gives. And I have to agree; Dr. Vencill gives out plenty of handouts, most of which will be helpful in answering questions on the midterm/final.
I gave him a C+ for outside availability since he doesn't have office hours over the summer. And he seems like he's always out going to a meeting after class. Email will probably be your best bet, otherwise, you can always arrange a time before/after class to meet with him.
Overall, I highly recommend taking any of his courses. Taking this class has inspired me to minor in Criminal Justice, and quite possibly, pursue a career in the field.

Dr. Vencill is very familiar with the subject and really knows what he is talking about! A kind professor and encourages students so that they will succeed and pass the class. When I was taking his class, he offered extra credit as well for those who weren't doing so well. Overall, a great professor!

A good teacher and a compelling speaker who gets a little out of hand sometimes trying to get a laugh out of the class. He makes too many parallels to subjects that holds no relevance, but he is interesting and funny. Its also a pretty easy class.

Vencill is a very entertaining speaker. I enjoyed his lectures very much. But that's the downside, coz he talks about other things going on in the world and that's what's fun to listen to. His lecturing is all over the place. The study guide was easier to comprehend. The tests are study guide problems, so the format is easy to understand and there are no tricks. No HW, just 3-4 tests, and some chances for extra credit.

Only taking this to fulfill some crazy requirement set forth for you by the powers that be? Don't care that much about Econ, but it somehow fits in your schedule where you need a fill-in?
Take this class. It caters to those of you who slack off and don't want to study real hard.
The tests are mostly based straight from the "Study Guide" that comes with the book you must purchase for the class. Word-for-word.
Vencill makes the lectures funny, BUT they really don't help with learning and knowing the material. In fact, his lectures confused me more, but since he was funny, I didn't mind showing up to class.
He gave us opportunities for extra credit, and doesn't take roll. Tests are not cummulative, either.
If you're looking for a more text-based class and want/need to actually learn the foundations of macroecon, I wouldn't suggest Vencill. But if you don't REALLY need econ, take him.

If you need an easy class, then you would be foolish if you did not take Dr. Vencill for Econ 515. There is one test and one final, that's it! He gives you 15 potential test questions, of which about 5 will be given for the test.
The lectures generally revolve around the criminal justice issues of the day. There is no text-book, although he makes you buy around 10 $10 paperback books. It was my experience that I didn't need to buy the books, because the information you need to know is reviewed in class lecture, or easily accessible via a google search.
Dr. Vencill has a habit of rambling about inane topics, that have little to do with the class. But that doesnt stop him from getting you the information needed for this class. He has a habit of giving you many handouts, of which you only need to read one or two lines of. (I'm surprised the tree-huggers at SFSU haven't protested thhis paper intensive class.)
Many criminal justice majors take this class, so it is a different feel in this econ class as oppossed to other econ classes you may have taken in the past.
I highly reccomend this class with Dr. Vencill...It's an easy A - and an interesting topic.

Not much needs to be said about this class.
Interesting lectures that often relate how a market or pricing works to the market for street drugs, since he is a professor of Crime and Justice too. He has a really interesting sense of humor, so material tends to stick in your head and you actually learn something.
No homework, although you have to read the textbook because the lectures tend to skip around to whatever he feels like lecturing on, and you'd better be able to do the workbook problems because the exam questions usually are word-for-word from the workbook.

He is a very good teacher. His lectures aren't boring, but entertaining in the way he presents his topics. He has a sense of humor and makes the class roar with laughter. There isn't much homework except for reading assignments. His exams are easy because they are mostly questions from his lectures or exact questions from the student handbook. Take his class if you want to earn a decent grade for just showing up to half of his class meetings like me!

Even though the subject can be quite dry and boring, Vencill tried his best to make it interesting. His lectures were clear and concise, he ties in current economic issues with the lessons found in the book and he's got a good sense of humor. The class consists of 3 ez midterms and a non-compre final. Nearly all of the test questions were taken from the study guide. Only homework is to read. Overall, if U really want to breeze thru econ, then he's the one to take.

Dr. Vencill is different... He doesn't take roll, he doesn't care about in class participation, and his exams are easy...
But he is still a good teacher.. He is very interesting to listen to (if you're interested in the subject), he makes very nice points, and his humor is killing. He doesn't seem to care too much about students' progress, but he says it's up to us. He gives reviews before the exam, and the questions in the exam are the same as on the review.

Dr. Vencil is a terrific teacher. He is always ready to help a student out when there is a problem. He has extensive knowledge about the subjects he teaches. Econ of Crime is a class very rare to any college. The class covers all aspects of crime. It is engaging as was hia Macro class.

This was a great class! The textbook he assigns is very well-written and easy to understand. And the textbook really compliments the lectures. He is a very approachable person and is willing to repeat or reinterpret any information. He makes the lectures interesting by using examples, and after the day you will feel like you really understand the material.

Dr. Vencill is someone that I would recommend highly. He is one the the best instructors I have ever taken. When you sit in on one of his lectures, you feel like you are having more of a conversation then being lectured at. He does not give homework, but after a lecture from him you are not confused and you understand everything that you have heard. He makes the subject matter *very* interesting, whether you are learning about guns and butter or what the market price of heroin would be if it was legal. In his Money and Banking class he brings in old Confederate Money and U.S. counterfeit money. I cannot recommend him enough. If you must endure econ 100 he is the best in my opinion to take. He gives study review sheets before each test, and that gives you a very clear idea of what will be on the test. As long as you show up to class and read the material (which is alusually very interesting as well), you will do well. He is one of those teachers that really makes you *want* to show up to class. You will not regret taking one of his classes in the slightest.
