Frederick "Ricki" Vincent

He is a very good teacher when he shows up to class. He is very enthusiastic about the topics we discuss. He also tries to get the students in the class to participate. He seems very knowledgable about the topics that we discuss. However, he has been absent to class a few times, which is not very good for us the sudents, because it is our time that is being lost.

I was expecting this to be a hard class, except it was so easy!! He gave the class a take home final and was very helpful in finding the answers. He gave out homework once in a while, and one midterm that was really easy! Most of the time he talks in class and expects the students to participate. And the papers he assigns, I bet he don't really read them. He basically just read your opinion section. And he also give out extra credit assisgnments (film reviews) to do if you want to get a good grade. If you want a easy teacher and easy passing grade, Vincent is the one!

"Funky funky Ricki Vincent" mighta sucked for them but hes a great teacher for hip hop. He knows what he's teaching and you can't leave the class without knowing some basics of hip hop and funk. He ain't dumb about his students and doesn't start his class promptly which is good when someone expects a group of hip hop heads to be in class at 9:35 in the morning. His work load is light but he sometimes allows class discussions to get too off track. I believe him when he says he's tryin to teach the youth. No one else played vintage soul train videos as research or brought Afrika Bambaataa to my class.

The consensus seems to be that Mr. Vincent is a horrible teacher, but he is not. He has a laid back demeanor that strikes some as "could care less" attitude. Although he does enforce his ideas and philosophies to the point that one wonders if he ever wants to see "the whole picture" he is a man dealing without a lot of stereotyped expectations and a negative outlook from most students from day one. I truly beleive that if Mr. Vincent were another race doing the exact same thing he is doing now, he would be regarded with a awe and respect.

While I can agree that Vincent was not a good teacher, I can say he's not the worst teacher I ever had. We had a syllabus, which he followed well. The tests were a joke. My 10 year old sister could have passed them. The subjects of the papers were up to us and I feel you got out of that whatever you put into it. He was not very friendly outside of class. I never went to his office hours because the class was so easy that it wasn't necessary, but I wouldn't have wanted to anyway, because he was never nice to me. The material he covered did strike me as strange sometimes, but critical thinking is about rejecting ideas that don't have proof to back them up and sometimes I had to do that. If you're looking for an easy grade, he's definitely the man to take.

Vincent is one of the worst instructors that I have taken at State. He did not show up for class three times, most of the class time when he was present was spent watching movies and when he did lecture he frequently went off topic for long periods of time. I'm not quite sure what the JFK conspiracy theory has to do with ethnic studies, but it came up at least twenty times throughout the class. Vincent has many other off-the-wall conspiracy theories to share. This class was very light on work, homework was frequent but very simple, only one paper was assigned and the final was two take home 1-3 page essays. An easy class with very little substance. Good to take if you want to get your Critical Thinking requirement out of the way.
