This guy is one of the best teachers in the BUS school. He knows his material and he really creates interesting lectures. He has no exam, but 10 essays instead(only require 2 pages double space). He is perfect for international students, becasue he said he don't care about the gramma in essay, but he need your ideas and your opinions. I strongly recommond this perfessor. you can not only get A, but also learn the Marketing.

Prof. Dan Wardlow really knows his stuff and presents the material in class with pertinent examples from everyday life. He encourages class participation and advocates sharing personal experiences. It was one of the most interesting classes I've taken in the Graduate program thus far. I would highly recommend him for any course in Marketing.
He graded us on essays that he made us write and on class participation. There were no exams.

DR. WARDLOW IS A VERY KNOWLEDGABLE PROFESSOR. HIS LECTURES ARE INTERESTING AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND. YES, HE DOES SPEAK RATHER FAST, HOWEVER, LECTURE CDS ARE AVAILABLE TO LISTEN TO IN CASE YOU WANT TO HEAR THE LECTURE AGAIN. THE EXAMS ARE GREAT. THEY REALLY TEST THE MARKETING CONCEPTS ADDRESSED IN CLASS AND IN THE BOOK. BUT THE QUESTIONS ARE USE REAL WORLD EXAMPLES SO YOU MUST FULLY UNDERSTAND THE MKTG CONCEPTS TESTED.

Comments on the grading:
Exams: Based on the text book and the lectures. A few questions on the exams were very tricky and some ask for YOUR oppinion of what to do in a real life situation. Problem is, if you give YOUR oppinion, the answer is most likely incorrect because it is a multiple choice test. Homework: The homework was effective in connecting what we had learned in class. However, doing the homework consumed lots of my time which could be used for reading the book or reviewing the lecture notes. Lectures: The prof. did an o.k. job teaching us marketing with the use of excellent examples. However, sometimes it was difficult for me to follow what he had to say because he talked so fast. Speaking Skills: See "Lectures" comments above.

This guy is one of the best teachers in the bus. school. He knows his material and he really creates interesting lectures.
I can't say how Dan would fare in the Saturday class (which, I assume, is taught differently since it's smaller) but he sure commands the attention of 200+ students quite well. He even has a decent sense of humor, which is a rarity in the bus. school. The class is entirely lectured although one day we did have a guest speaker but he was kind of lame. The tests are 40-question multiple choice and aren't quite as challenging as they could be. Problem solving and critical thinking aren't required for this class. There are two exams and then the final, which is a third exam and not cumulative.
He puts together a big outline for the class and you can follow along through his slide presentation (which he relies heavily on) so you're not copying notes instead of listening. You can either buy the book or a CD-rom which has little games and video clips. You could definitely get away with not buying either. Also, if you miss a class there are review CDs which I found particularly helpful.
Another great thing is that the exam scores are posted online just a few hours after the exam. The exam questions and correct answers are posted to. You can also go to office hours and review your test and ask questions. When I went in he kind of just sat there and that was weird but then I realized he was waiting for me to ask any questions I might have had.
And as for the poor reviews regarding advising.... I went to him for a little academic advising and I had my questions answered. The man isn't a mind reader so you do have to ask specific questions.

Prof. Wardlow is a wonderful teacher! He is very enthusiastic about the subject and genuinely cares about his students. The material is straight forward, the tests are easy and the lectures are interesting. The only bad thing about this class is that it is held in the Stonestown Theater. Such a pain in the ass! I would recommend this teacher to anyone, just TRY to go to class despite the hassle in getting there.

This is a brilliant teacher who really knows his stuff. He brings the material to life through his very organized lectures. The text book is not really needed, because his lectures cover everything. his tests are based on the lectures---pay attention in class and you will do great. Sometimes he was a little cranky and so i did not take it personally. Overall i highly recommend him

He is a great teacher. He know his material inside out and his class isn't hard at all. He makes his lecutre very interesting and a pleasure to attend to everyday. Only problem is the three exams which bascially makes up your whole grade for the semester but the final isn't comprehensive, so that was good. Once sentence can describe him if you have to take mktg431. TAKE HIM, you won't regret it, one of the best teachers at SF State.

Maybe I am jaded bcuz the class was so different than what I expected. Maybe I am enthralled by the lack of tests. Maybe I am elated at the prospect of the A I expect to receive. Well whatever the cause, I think this guy is a great teacher. Initially I thought the class would teach me little, however I left w/ a feeling that I had learned a lot of stuff which would prove useful later in life. I even considered changing majors. but I have wayy too much invested in my other major.
If possible take his Saturday morning class. I hear the large lecture is much less fun.

this is a real teacher. very rare at this school. he knows his material, very well presented and has a good attitude about teaching (in other words he want to be here) as well as having unique insights about life. He cracks me up being such a "long haired hippie, macintosh using, electric car driving, ice cream lover" thats what we like about him. He encurages us to examine and analyze the marketing tactics around us constantly. a real unique teacher that actually has some REAL world buisness experience, unlike most of the bus teachers. Hey the class is early in the morning, but the exams are fair and he offered an alternative that is helpfull. You'll find this course fullfilling and helpful to real life!! he helped me to "open" my eyes to the marketing tactics that is constantly occuring. good job Dan!!

I didn't take any class from Wardlow, but I did go to him for advising. I agree with some of the others... getting him to help to any degree is like pulling teeth... I can read the schedule or bulletin by myself. He seems to think that his department and the subjects that he teaches are oh so important. While I can't say don't take his classes, I can say don't go to him for any advising.

Dan Wardlow knows how to tackle marketing problems because he sees and deals with a lot of bullshit occurring in todays world. Dan Wardlow's teaching style does not bullshit anyone because you will always feel great to have him for his opinions about real life problems. Don't ever bring anything Microsoft to him because he will feel so much bullshit with Bill Gates and he wants people to support Apple and Steve Jobs. I rather have a person who supports Apple than Microsoft because Dan Wardlow is the person who does not committ any monopolies in any respect. When he says "bullshit," you have to understand that there is so much bullshit out there that you will solve with him, which made me give him an 'A.'

Also, Dan Wardlow has so much humor that his teaching style is to entertain, not bore people. If you plan to enroll in Dan Wardlow's Marketing classes, I would definitely enroll with him because he shows tremendous respect for students' thoughts, ideas, etc. on Marketing and I rather support him.

Are we reviewing the same guy here? I was sick the semester I took this class and I got an incomplete from Wardlow. He did ask me for a letter from my doctor, but I didn't get the feeling he was out to get me personally. I finished up the next semester by just taking the exam I missed, no problems. It's a big class, and he does seem strict about enrollment and grades. But the tests were really easy if you come to class. I got a B. And he watches too many Honda ads? Hmmm ... well, it's a marketing class after all.

He was OK as a teacher. His in class anecdotes were cool and informative. But allow me to cut to the chase. Also, on advising day, I visited him during his office hours for some advising and he was very unpleasant and rude--like I interrupted him.

I just read the other reviews ... what can I add? I had the Saturday section with written essays every week instead of exams. If you don't slack off, it's easy to keep up and Wardlow makes marketing SO interesting. The whole thing in his class is learning from your own experiences with marketing. The main thing I learned was to think about my own interactions with marketing critically now that I understand how marketing works. Cool class, especially if you're never going to take another marketing class.

To the previous reviewer: you should get your own story straight! In your first "F" review of this excellent instructor, you said you were a 32 year old female who had dropped the class. Now you say you're a 22 year old male who got an A! As to your problems with exams: Wardlow TOLD the class that exam questions didn't come directly from either textbook OR from the cdrom. And you know what? If you had paid any attention at all in this class, you would have realized that Wardlow was asking you (YOU!) to learn to apply all these marketing ideas, and what he spent the whole semester doing was giving us examples of applications in class. I thought the class was a breeze. Finally, exactly HOW are anonymous comments here supposed to suck up to the instructor? The instructor doesn't know who posted here, and can't "favor" anyone as a result. Readers: disregard this moron who gives Wardlow an F ... the class is interesting and easy.

In my 4 yrs of college, I've only really liked 3 teachers. Dan is *definitely* one of them. He knows his mktg stuff like the back of his hand. He won't make you feel "stupid" for asking questions. If you email him something or your question, he'll respond by the next morning. If he taught another Mktg class, I'd be the first to register (even if it didn't fulfill anything). If you like teachers that are experienced and prepared for their class, *TAKE* Wardlow!!! BTW...I'm not the brightest of all students, but Dan made learning so easy and fun...I managed to get an *A.*

DO NOT listen to the review that gave Dan Wardlow an "F". He is one of the best teachers I have had in my educational career. Rarely will you find a professor that is not only extremely well educated in the subject, but has a dedicated and interesting teaching style. He has done everything he can to make this introductory marketing course fun and interesting. My major is management, but I can see why so many people pick marketing as their business concentration with a course and a professor like this one to start them out. He uses a lot of real life examples (not just Baskin Robbins) so the concepts become easier to understand. Take Dan Wardlow as a professor for this class if you really want to learn and understand the subject.

Professor Wardlow is an excellent professor. I don't understand how some of you could have given him an F. He doesn't deserve it at all. What he deserves is an A. His lectures are fun and realistic. If you come to class and take good notes, you will be able to do well in the class. A good tip: He uses a lot of the examples from his lectures for exam questions. Just take down all the examples and remember them. You will do well. His tests are fair and he uses real life situations for the exams. It's a great class. He is always enthusiastic about teaching. So what if he talks about Baskin Robbins? He is using his real life experience to help you better understand the lecture. That's all. He is a great marketer/professor. If you gave him an F, it's because you didn't come to class, didn't study, and didn't do well on the exams. Of course, that's your fault, not his.

I really appreciate his experiences working in marketing along with his views as a consumer. He's really good at getting you to learn from your own experiences with marketing. If you're the sort of student who wants to memorize a textbook and spit it back, DO NOT take Wardlow. You'll hate him because you have to think in his class. The previous reviewer must be an idiot. I found the lectures really interesting ... his examples (even from Baskin-Robbins) all served to explain marketing concepts. I also used the cdrom and was disappointed that the exam questions mostly come from class ... not from the cd or the book (I suspect). The exams are hard because you have to apply concepts. He doesn't want you to spit back definitions. If you come to class and you can think for yourself, this class is entertaining and easy.

He is fair and nice to all his students, and his lecture keeps you being interested in marketing. Besides, his story of his family and friends makes you feel so close to him indeed. And he is really experienced in marketing and knowledgeable as well. During lecture, he provides tons of stories related to his marketing experience, and they help a lot to understand the basic marketing concepts. His exams are straight forward, and he will never ask anything he doesn't cover in class. If you are considering to major in marketing, he's the one you want to start with! (I'm not majoring in marketing, but the class was fun!!!)
