I actually took this class at CCSF, but the curriculum is basically the same. Corky, her nickname, is warm, friendly, and easy to get along with. She doesn't actually teach us anything, but instead, we learn from the speeches from our fellow classmates, as well as from our own speeches. As long as you meet the time limit of the speech, she'll give you a B+, but if you want an A, you will need to have different variations in your voice. In addition, you need to be a bit humourous, and show emotions through your speech. And ALWAYS maintain eye contact with the audience. The first 4 speeches are videotaped, to help the students critique their own speech. In other words, students can see what they did right, and what things they like to improve and comment on it. There were a total of 7 speeches, as well as a paper--4 pages--that relates to something about speech, such as movies, poems, talk shows, etc. It's the student's choice. There's also exercises in the beginning of the class, that is, exercises that involve speaking. Each student, or pair of students, must do one exercise during the semester. It's really easy actually. You also have to do commentaries for other speeches, which means, you give comments, good or bad, to another person's speech. Personally, I hate that because I don't like taking criticism, or like giving them out either, that is, when your comment can decide whether or not the student gets a better grade or not. Overall, Corky is one of the better SFSU professor for speech, so you can't go wrong if you do decide to take one of her classes.

WOW!!! What a great lady and great class!! This teacher hs you call her by her nickname, sit in circles and tell everyone your opinoin on everything, has ice-breaker exercises, has a love for life and her students, and a zeal about her that is wonderful. She encourages everyone to be completely open and honest (as she is when she tells everyone she is a lesbian) and makes the environment safe to share anything-confidentiality is a must!! i loved her and i can't say enough good things about her. I recommend her class to EVERYONE needing to fulfill their speech requirement.
