Prof Yansane teaches The Rich & Poor Nations (IR 540) and is extremely intelligent and very interesting. He does give lectures that are not always easy to follow but most everything he talks about is in the reader so if you miss something he says, just look it up.
I would not, however, recommend following his lecture with the reader opened on your desk because it may only frustrate you. Because of his accent he is very good at stating phrases slowly and at repeating things over & over so you can get everything down and if you're trying to read along, it will only bring impatience.
I personally am extremely interested in Africa and because he is from West Africa, it only makes sense that he would focus on those nations more than Asian or Latin American countries, but just be prepared for that. If you think you will hear an equal amount of information on all the poor nations, realize the class will focus mostly on West Africa.
His tests are fair and while there is a ton of reading and writing to do during the semester, you are allowed to turn papers in a day or two late without penalty. I would recommend his class & I would encourage you to ask about his background because it is extremely interesting to hear true stories about growing up in a third world country under colonization.
