One of the worst teacher's I've ever had!!!

The examples that he shows in class often leaves you confused and are not helpful at all. He would tell you one thing and then change his mind and leaves you hanging. The text book he assigns has so many errors that it makes you wonder how it even got published. Be careful on test day b/c the exams are worded very awkwardly. One of the worst teachers i've ever had!!!

What a waste of time

If you enjoy finance or would like to learn more usefull things in this area do not take this class. This is like a good experiment by Finance Faculty gone horribly wrong. This class used to be a required course for Fin majors and included ARIMA modeling and Options, what a mess... Now it 3/4 of the semester are passionately devoted to ARIMA modeling (q,t stats) and the final weeks are awkwardly concentrated on Financial statement analysis... These 2 subjects do not even relate. In this class you will spend most of your time drilling statistics (i thought that 212 was for that purpose); run multiple regressions, discover statistical significance (is there such a thing? ) and perform hypothesis testing (how many jobs out there require such knowledge ?). The class is not interesting, does not provide any kind of new insights, it is almost empty (12 people) and Yip is not the greatest teacher. Boring :(

FIN 309 is too hard. FIN 535 is too easy

I told FIN 535 last summer, and that was my second time to have him. I first had him for FIN 309 for my first major class. FIN 309 was way too hard and terrible. I mean the first half of the semester of all about statistic. I was very confused at that time because I didnt know what Yip talked about. Plus I studied the wrong thing for my first exam. But the second half of the semester was just totally different because we were only focus on option which was easy. However, I still got a D for FIN 309 even I did well on my final exam. The reason was I failed the first exam and didnt get very good grade on the first two case studies. Once I registered for FIN 535 in Summer 01, I worried about if I would end up with the same grade I had for FIN 309. However, FIN 535 was a lot easier that FIN 309. I had no problem with the class material or exam. Although summer section was very short, my term was still able to finish up the project on time and make a okay presentation within couple weeks. Yips exams were all about his lecture, examples in class, and homework. If you attend all his class, do your homework, and study for his slides, you should be okay in the exam (It really helps if you read the book. I read every cheaper he covered but no need to memorize the material in the book). I received B+ form his class and you can see there is a big difference between my grade for FIN 309 and FIN 535. I think Yip is a good teacher, but what makes him so hard is because of the subject. However, if you are majoring in IBUS, I think FIN 535 will be very difficulty for you because there are so many math you are required to do in his homework and exams.

Overall, he's a great instructor.

The instructor provides great lecture notes. In addition, he assigns projects and supplementary homework problems which are closely related to what we learn in class and so they are highly relevant and excellent practice and learning tools for the exams.

Great job YIP!

Professor Yip is an awesome professor. The topic is very challenging, but Professor Yip does to notch work to make the information understandable. His tests are tough, but they definitely test your knowledge. As long as you study for the class you should not have a problem.

A terrible teacher

If you are a finance major, too bad, you have to take Mr.Yip for 309 because he is the one and only one who teaches this class. Or you can wait until the department put this class to elective. I am not trying to scare you, but if you are going to take him, you'd better get ready for all those statistic materials because he will not go over the so-call basic formulas for you, such as how to calculate standard deviation. Also, get good group members. You have to do three group projects, and also need to sumitt group evaluation. I really have a hard time to understand his material. Mr.Yip's teaching style is very very boring, you can easily get loss in his class. The books are terrible. The first one is some kind of work book specially for sfsu, and second one worthes more than $60 and he only goes over 3 chapters. I will suggest you to copy those chapers and return the book because it is NOT worth it. You will have a hard time to understand the books, and he even told us not to read certain chapers because they were too confusing. You need to earn up to 369 points to get an A-, 150 pts for each of the 2 exams including final, attendance and homework can earn up to 14 extra points, 30 points for each of the first 2 projects, 40 points for the third project. The 14 extra points can really help you, try to sumitt the homework. Taking good notes will also help you to understand. Never try to ask him questions through email, he will either tell you to go back to certain pages in the book, or simply say "We will discuss this in class on Thursday!" So save you time, don't email him at all. Don't ever try to get the projects from last semester because he has all different projects for EVERY semester, and they are so HARD and so REALISTIC. There will be 2 hours for each exam, 20 multiple choices and 2 calculation problems. Sounds pretty good, huh? Image that you have to spend at least 5 minutes for each multiple choice probelm, how will that be? He put all those huge calculation into multiple choice, just like Wade does. You will never have enough time for the exam for sure, never ever. If you are looking for an A-, I will suggest: 1. go to class 2. sumitt the homework for the extra points 3. take good notes 4. get good group members, such as your friends 5. study hard, I mean very hard 6. PRAY!!!!!

A good teacher!

Dr. Yip is a very good teacher. Exams are base on his lectures and projects, so if you did pay effort to study for his lecutre and projects, you will be fine when you take the exams.

Example, One of my group members had never paid any effort to do the projects that Dr. Yip assigned. She didn't go to lectures and group meetings at all and instead of it, she just went to the computer lab and surf the net. So, what she got for this class --- D-. (she's lucky that she hadn't gotten a F).

So, paying effort is most important for all of us while studying.

Professor Yip does not teach in class. If you want any help or need to understand the material, you need to go to his office. If you ask the question more than once, he gets upset with the students. After our first test, he decided to teach one day but it was short lived. I agree that he can teach but he doesn't have the desire to do it in a class room setting.

Dr. Yip is very responsible, well-prepared and helpful. The projects he assigned are all very helpful for us to understand the material for the course. The exams are also very reasonable which cover the projects we did, his lecture and the text.

In my opinion, Professor Yip is doing an excellent job so far and if you can not handle this class, then maybe you should drop the class. He is well prepared, organized, and very capable of explaining his ponits. I am very happy with his teaching method and I think most of my friends do agree with me. "Thanks a lot Dr. Yip"
