Great teacher

Shanna is an amazing teacher!!! She is very passionate about science and teaching. She will work very hard to make lectures very interesting and interactive. Make sure you buy her Lecture Supplement it will help you a lot at the lectures. Her review sessions are extremely helpful, if you have time, do show up. Her tests are tricky and sometimes are a little bit too hard but she gives you an opportunity to get extra credit and she also drops your lowest exam.

An excellent teacher

Shaana is an excellent teacher. Her lectures are helpful, but you have to study a lot on your own too. Her exams are little bit tricky so you have to really understand the material. If you don't understand something, Shaana will always take the time to explain it. From my experience, I can say that even after 2 semesters I still remember a lot from her lectures and that's why I think that choosing her class is the best choice you can make.

She is an awesome teacher for this class, I suck at Biology and I liked her!

Shana is a FAIR teacher..She teaches right from her study guide. Her tests are fair, sometimes maybe a little tricky, you just have to read the questions more than once. She is funny, smart and always willing to help you.

Microbes!

Coming into this class with a science background might make this review a lil biased, but ah well. Science classes DO tend to be a bit more demanding, but Shanna's class is far from being nitpicky, detail-oriented. More focus is placed on diseases and the microbes that cause them. Most of the stuff in the textbook is far too detailed for this class and the key to getting a good grade here is THAT YELLOW LECTURE SUPPLEMENT. Fill out those questions, practice and go over those review questions before the exam, and the exam will be a lot easier. Show up at lecture, and save yourself a lot of time and effort of having to read the book and trying to figure out what exactly will be covered on the exam. A lot of students didn't show up to class, and a good number of them felt overwhlemed with the exam material. Study groups help.

Her case studies and "homework" worksheets are pretty easy, they take about 20 minutes to do, etc.

A teacher dedicated to helping you pass

Shanna was a very thorough and helpful prefessor. Covering basic biology within less than three months is difficult to do because there is so much material to cover, but I felt that her study guide allowed me to focus on the more important material and made it much easier for me to prepare for the test. Her lectures followed the study guide so there was no need to read the text, just attend the class meetings. There were times when the lecture was a bit tedious, but Shanna would crack a few jokes every now and then that really were quite funny

Shanna was a respectful teacher that went out of her way to make sure students learned.

I loved taking Shanna's class for both Biology 100 and 210. I'm not a great note taker, but that didn't matter because she follows her study guides very well. All you need to do is answer the questions on them and answer the study questions at the end of each section. Shanna kept my attention the whole time that I was in class and I took advantage of the tapes that she left in the library to fill the holes in my study guide. I also attended the study sessions that she presented and found them fairly well attended.

During her office hours, Shanna was very kind and helpful to me...much more so then Community College teachers I've had in the past. She showed me a lot of respect and her goal is for her students to learn the material.

My grade is more of a reflection of my test taking skills, but my retention of the material stayed with me even after the exams.

"Your basic boring biology class"

Shanna Yonenaka is very humorous, but that does not save her class, Biology 100, from being a cool class. It is the typical college course-lecture,lecture,lecture.Same thing every day.She did put study guides on the SFSU webpage to prepare for the exam, but even with those, the exams were very challenging. She never shows videos, but does show slides-perhaps too much. You may as well just read the book and come for the tests.Roll is never taken. Also, my tests were marked with mistakes which were actually correct, so check your scantrons to make sure nothing right was marked wrong.

I would not recommend taking this class to anyone unless you absolutely have to for your major; or maybe you have a itchy desire to suffer, only to discover nothing was gained. I have taken many other science classes and realize that science courses tend to be more demanding. I took this course hoping to gain some day to day information about disease. However, I can honestly say that I learned nothing because her lectures are way too detailed. As far as the tests are concerned they were all very difficult. It almost seemed that every multiple choice question was an attempt to completely confuse you. There are four tests all 50 questions long. I felt this was a bit much in consideration to another Biology course I took-human bio. that had only three tests, two were 30 Q's long and the final 40. If you got 28 or above on the first two tests you were exempt from the final. The tests for this class were cake and I left the class with a good understanding of the subject matter, all I left Micro-Bio for public health with was a huge headache!!!

I found Prof. Yonenaka to be clear and understandable. It is the nature of the course that there is a lot of material to cover, but she made it as easy as possible. I took it before she published the course reader, so I don't know if this has changed, but she used to tape record every lecture and make them available in the library. She also offered extra review sessions before the exams, which were also recorded./n/nThe exams were clearly written and quite fair -- too easy, if anything. I definitely don't think that she had unreasonable expectations. She knows it's a general ed course, and clearly targets that audience. She also tries to make the subject interesting by using examples that students encounter in real life. A great survey course, and a very competent professor.

Shanna's lectures were excellent, informative, with much humor and modern-day relevence. My only criticism would be that she may have been too easy on us - sometimes concepts were repeated several times over many lectures after we may have already gotten the picture. Otherwise, one of the most understandable lecturers I've ever had, with an amazing study guide as well - who would have ever thought that it may have upped me at least a full grade. The only criticism I would have of her besides in her lecture is that sometimes she was a little hard to approach outside of class.

I personally did not find Shanna Yonenaka's class to be difficult to follow at all. Her lectures are easy to follow, especially since she provides a study guide for all of her lectures (it's $20 at the bookstore). I personally didn't buy the study guide but I'm still doing fine since her lectures are well organized and she lets the students know what chapters in the textbook are covered. The grade in the class is based on 4 multiple choice tests, including a final which may or may not count double (whichever is best for you). Multiple choice test tricks (like picking the longest answer) do not work here so you actually have to learn the material. I personally enjoy her lecture style because her lectures are clear, and she keeps a sense of humor.

I find her class very difficult to follow. Her lecture often times are not really helpful into preparing you for a mid-term. She has no review for mid-terms, and her study guide isn't too helpful (if you don't have no, but is in the reserved library). Even reading the textbook isn't too helpful into preparing you for the test. Her test are multiple choice, and there are a few trick question on the mid-term. She does offer help if you need it in her office hours. She also gives out extra credit which should help boost your grade. If you take her class, then "Good Luck".
